About a year ago, I was sitting in my song writing room at my house thinking about the amazing fact that I have a room in my home that Lorna let me decorate any way I wanted (major win). A room that was there exclusively as a space to let my creative juices flow. This is a stark contrast from the previous two decades of “creative spaces” I used to write and record, like closets or under a blanket at the dining room table. What a tremendous blessing! I took a long look around the room, admiring my deep green walls that held several plaques that serve as memorial stones from songs that, by the grace of God, have connected with people all over the world. What a blessing! I could hear the busy little feet of my, then, 3 boys on their latest adventure through the ceiling. They were probably in ninja costumes with flashlights and all types of make-shift weapons as they hunted make-believe monsters. What an incredible blessing! In the other room my amazing wife was prepping the house for our family that would soon gather to celebrate a televised award ceremony that I had the privilege of being featured in. It’s the dream! What a blessing! I went over to the upright piano, the same piano I started the song Hills and Valley’s on just a few years back. With all the good that surrounded me and with all the beauty that filled my life I thought when my hands touched the keys a song of gratitude and praise would burst out. But, the words that flowed over a simple melancholy chord progression were “You could have it all…and still feel empty.” Was my life full but my soul empty? If it was, I wasn’t aware of what was happening beneath the surface. If it were true, how could I feel this way? Here I am surrounded by more than I could ever need or deserve, a beautiful family, a flourishing ministry and career, yet still an intangible longing persists.

I love the church. I’ve also been wounded by church people—everything from being simply misunderstood to facing racial discrimination. If you’ve been hurt, I know the feeling! But when I think about it, I’ve been hurt to some degree by just about everyone I’ve ever really loved. Hurt happens, especially in situations in which we allow ourselves to connect with others at a certain level of depth and vulnerability. (Please hear me say this: abuse of any kind should never be tolerated in the name of love.)

Are the casualties in the name of religion

So you think that you’d be safer from a distance

And won’t say it’s not true

I remember turning in the demo of my song “Come Home" to my label and getting an unexpected question back: “Is this, like, a deconstructionist idea or what?” At the time, I had no idea what the term “deconstructionist” meant. Maybe you’ve heard that term thrown around lately and been confused, too. Deconstruction is a growing trend in Christianity, especially in America, in which people who grew up going to church and identifying as Christians are beginning to “deconstruct” their belief system. For many, this means separating their religious convictions from any political or cultural baggage that often gets lumped in with being “a Christian.” For others, it means reevaluating their relationship with the church and other religious institutions. For some, it means giving up their relationship with God altogether. So you can see why I was puzzled by my label’s question. After a short, awkward pause I answered, “I think it’s more just about getting hurt by the church and speaking to the wounds caused by religion.” I would venture to say that the vast majority of individuals that have become disenchanted with church, religion, or faith have become so because of painful religious experiences that either sparked or confirmed their skepticism or that marred their genuine belief.

What we understand about the character of God matters so much because it informs and frames how we think about everything else. If we see Jesus as a powerful but far-away God, we may not believe He really even cares about us. On the other hand, if we see Jesus only as a kind, wise man, we may believe that He came merely to help us, not to save us. Seeing a God that exists within our reality and beyond it awakens us to the notion that there is a reality that we exist in and still one beyond it. Serious students of the Bible call this the temporal and the eternal. That just means that there’s a now and there’s a forever.

Everything happens for a reason

There have been moments in the midst of my faith-walk when I have struggled to make sense of the difficulties I’ve experienced personally or helplessly watched others face. I’ve been in worship services singing words to songs that declared truths that seemed to contradict what I or others in tough situations were experiencing. I’ve caught myself singing about how God is undefeated and never loses battles while feeling like I was in the middle of a losing streak. I’ve heard myself proclaiming God’s healing power while seemingly not seeing that power at work in the lives of those fighting physical battles every single day.
